1. What do I need to bring if this is my first time filing my taxes with Kumars?

  • TWO forms of government-issued picture ID. Acceptable forms are: US Passport, Drivers License, Motor Vehicles ID, US Military ID, or a Resident Alien ID (“Green Card”); in place of these, you may bring a current Employer-issued ID or a Student ID (these must be Photo IDs). Note: Your Birth Certificate is not acceptable, and is not needed.
  • Your Social Security Card.
  • Proof of income, such as: all of your original W-2 forms for last year, and all 1099 forms sent to you for income earned last year (such as the letter NY State sent if you collected Unemployment).
  • For all dependents, a copy of their Social Security Card and birth certificate.
  • For a spouse, a copy of one acceptable Picture ID and social security card.
  • Previous year’s tax returns – both Federal (IRS) and NY State.

2. What do I need to bring if I filed my taxes with Kumars last year?

If nothing has changed since last year, you only need to bring:

  • One form of government-issued picture ID (see under previous question).
  • Proof of income (see under previous question).

If anything HAS changed since last year, you also need to bring documents that show those changes, such as:

  • A copy of the Social Security Card of any dependents you did NOT claim on last year’s return.
  • Birth Certificates of any dependents (children or adopted) born in the last calendar year whom you are claiming.

NOTE: You do NOT need to bring a copy of the previous year’s tax return.

3. Can I file my tax return with Kumar’s even if I don’t reside in New York?

Yes; you must mail your information (same as above) and we will contact you to discuss your individual circumstances.

4. Do I need an appointment?

We do not make appointments; just drop by our office during business hours:
Monday to Saturday 10AM-7PM. (Closed Sundays)

5. Is there a best time to come?

Come any time during business hours. If you come after March 6, we will give you a $10 discount on each tax return we file for you (Federal & State count as one return). Also, you are less likely to have to wait if you come after March 6.

6. I have received a NY State Audit Letter regarding my business; can you help me with this?

Yes, we will work with you to prove that you are self-employed – but only AFTER April 15. This service involves an additional fee beyond the cost of preparing your returns. However, these cases are not resolved overnight or with one visit or phone call.

7. Do you have a drop-off service?

Yes, we do. Please be sure that you put all your information in a sealed envelope with your name and telephone number on the front. One of our tax preparers will contact you [within X days?] to tell you if your information is complete, will let you know the day you need to come in to review and sign your returns.

NOTE: Before coming here, please be sure that the information you leave off is complete – check the lists under questions # 1 and 2 above. We recommend that you make a photocopy of all papers in the envelope, in case we discuss them with you on the phone.

8. How can I pay for the preparation of my returns?

You may pay our fee with cash (we will provide a receipt). Or, if you have a refund due you, you may request to have our fee deducted from the amount due you, as long as you choose to e-file and have your refund deposited in your bank account.

NOTE: We do not accept checks or credit cards under any conditions.

9. What are the ways to get my refund?

You have a number of choices:

  • Instant refund: within 10 minutes for those who qualify
  • 24 hours: office pick-ups/direct deposit into your account (bring a voided check)
  • 15 to 21 days: office pick-ups/direct deposit into your account (bring a voided check)
  • You may request that a check be mailed to you – this can take 6 to 8 weeks!

10. Who can I claim as a dependent on my return?

Anyone who meets the conditions below:

  • A child under age 19, OR under age 24 as long as he/she was a full-time student at a regular educational institution.
  • The taxpayer has furnished more than one-half of the dependent’s support.

11. What is the maximum amount of income I can earn and still get the earned income Credit?

You may be able to qualify for this credit if:

  1. You have more than one qualifying child and you earned less than $35,263 ($37,263 if married filing jointly).
  2. You have one qualifying child and you earned less than $31,030 ($33,030 if married filing jointly).
  3. You do not have a qualifying child and you earned less than $11,750 ($13,750 if married filing jointly).

12. Is there any way to check whether my refund check has been mailed?

You can check the status of your refund at these websites:

For your federal refund, www.irs.gov
For your NY State refund, www.tax.state.ny.us

From the first day your refund shows up on either site, you must give at least 5 business days (that is, don’t count Saturdays, Sundays, and legal holidays) before it arrives, either at Kumars or at your home.
